The tension was doused following the intervention of the policemen who were drafted to the scene to restore order. An attempt to attack a branch of Access Bank in Akowonjo, Lagos State on Friday has been foiled by a combined team of policemen attached to the Gowon Estate and Shasha police divisions. PUNCH Metro reports that some aggrieved customers stormed the premises of the bank to protest over their inability to withdraw money. Their demand, however, degenerated when one of the customers started to hurl stones at the building. The tension was doused following the intervention of the policemen who were drafted to the scene to restore order. The Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) Has Directed All Banks In The Country To Collect Old And Mutilated ₦500 And ₦1,000 Notes From Circulation In a circular issued by the CBN Director of Currency Operations, Ahmed Umar, to all deposit money banks and the general public, the apex bank stated that the move was aimed at ensuring that only clean and fit notes are in circulation. The CBN also directed the banks to ensure that the old notes are replaced with new ones, and warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract stiff penalties. According to the circular, the CBN emphasized that the old notes, which have been in circulation for over 20 years, are no longer suitable for transactions, as they are often dirty and torn. The CBN urged the general public to return all old and mutilated notes to their respective banks for exchange, and warned that it would continue to enforce the policy to ensure the availability of clean notes in the country. Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari. He failed Buhari’s decision banning the use of old N500 and N1000 notes. Wike, who expressed sadness over Buhari’s declaration, stressed that it was not proper. The Central Bank of Nigeria had extended the deadline for the swap of N200, N500, and N1,000 from January 31 to February 10. The Supreme Court had ordered the Federal Government and the CBN to discontinue with the deadline pending the determination of a motion on notice in respect of the issue on February 22. But, Buhari directed the apex bank to recirculate only the old N200 notes with the new ones. However, Wike said the President’s declaration, despite the Supreme Court ruling, was not proper. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, said over 400,000 security personnel would be deployed for the smooth conduct of the general elections across the country. The IGP made the disclosure yesterday at the 66th Ministerial Media Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday. He said out of this number, the police would provide over 300,000 personnel, while the rest would be sourced from complementary security agencies in the country.
