Customers Stranded At Banks In Anambra Over Lack Of New Notes 4 Days To CBN Deadline Some commercial banks in Awka, Anambra State have stopped paying customers over the counter or via Automated Teller Machines (ATM), preventing members of the public from making transactions, with just four days to the deadline for the old version of N200, N500 and N1,000 Naira notes to cease from being legal tender in Nigeria. SaharaReporters reports that the banks stopped paying customers because of the unavailability of the newly ‘redesigned’ Naira notes. Following the ‘redesigning’ of the Naira notes, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2022 gave January 31, 2023, as the deadline for the exchange of old notes for the newly redesigned notes. Insisting that the deadline which is now just four days away stands, the apex bank had directed commercial banks across the country to work even on Saturdays to enable Nigerians to deposit all the old notes in their possession. Joshua Alobo, a Nigerian lawyer, has dragged the Central Bank of Nigeria to court. Mr Alobo, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/114/2023, also prayed the court to make an order extending the duration when the old banknotes would cease to be legal tender for three weeks. CBN Applauds Banks In Ogun Over Circulation Of New Naira Notes As the January 31st deadline for the phasing out of the old N200, N500 and N1000 note approaches, officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Abeokuta Branch on Thursday visited various Mobile money/Point of Sales agents in Ogun State to monitor the implementation of its recently introduced cash swap policy. The cash swap programme is targeted at fast-tracking the withdrawal of the old notes from circulation. The apex bank recently directed its super agents to swap the old N200, N500 and N1,000 naira notes for the newly redesigned notes under the policy. “Super agents are companies licensed by the CBN to recruit agents for the purpose of agency banking”.
