The Lagos State Police Command paraded the two German shepherd dogs yesterday at its headquarters in Ikeja, Punch reports. Speaking about it, the Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti, said; "We have brought the dogs out so that the public would know that they are still in police custody. They have been examined and they show no negative trait. It is only the court that will decide what happens to them. The police cannot decide to kill the dogs.” Am I the only one who finds this weird? Anyway, the little victim, Omo, had asked that the dogs be killed but the police say it's up to the courts. Meanwhile the owner of the do...

Gov Rotimi Amaechi insults Nollywood practitioners to their faces, says they are products of circumstances

This would have been funny if it wasn't pathetic. Rotimi said these actors studied sciences, law, medicine etc but because they couldn't find jobs, they embraced Nollywood. Present when he said this were Nollywood veterans including Liz Benson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Shola Sobowale, Desmond Elliot, Moses Inwang, Dickson Iroegbu, Bob-manuel Udokwu, Patience Ozokwor, Elvis...

Again Jail Break, Same Reaction

HOW many prison breaks would it take to secure our prisons? Like in Akure in July 2013, where armed robbers let 175 criminals loose, while freeing their colleagues, last week’s incident in Kirikiri, Nigeria’s prime jail, Kirikiri would soon be history. Before Akure there have been jail breaks in Ibadan, Warri, Bauchi, Kano, Abuja (at the anti-robbery detention centre), and Port Harcourt. The reactions have always been the same – media talks, promises to address the situation, and forgetfulness until the next criminals free themselves. A jail break is at one of the highest points of criminality. Its consequences depend on the criminals involved and their motives. What all these point at is that the authorities have failed to realise the importance of securing convicts and detainees. There is still a high tendency of dismissing the schemes criminals can plot even while in jail. More importantly, the reactions after jail breaks had been to descend on the prison authorities. We are aware t...

Horn-Free-Day: Mixed feelings as Lagos moves to tackle noise pollution

Mixed feelings have continued to trail efforts of the Lagos State Government to tackle the menace of noise pollution in the metropolis, whose population is put at 21 million. While speaking last Thursday, at the First Lagos Drivers’ Appreciation Day, a programme organised by the state‘s Ministry of Transportation, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry House, Alausa, Ikeja, to sensitise drivers on the maiden horn-free day slated for tomorrow, the state governor, Babatunde Fashola called on residents, particularly, motorists to desist from activities capable of generating needless noise in the state, saying a noiseless society is possible. At the occasion, where no fewer than 25 distinguished professional drivers were rewarded for obeying traffic regulations, Fashola had affirmed that noise pollution can be reduced in the state, if residents collaborate with government just as they did in the containment of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD. As typical of various Lagos metropolis and subu...
