Claudio Ranieri sacked by Leicester 298 days after Premier League title win

Leicester City have sacked Claudio
Ranieri just nine months after he
led the club to their first Premier
League title.
Ranieri guided Leicester to the most
unlikely of title wins last season and
went on to win FIFA's Coach of the
Year for the achievement.
However, Ranieri and Leicester
have struggled this season, with the
club sitting just one point and one
position above the relegation zone,
having failed to score a single
league goal in 2017.
Leicester are still in with a chance
of qualifying for the quarterfinals of
the Champions League following
Wednesday's 2-1 round-of-16 first-
leg defeat to Sevilla, but the club
have opted to remove Ranieri
ahead of Monday's Premier League
clash against Liverpool.
A Leicester statement read:
¤
"Leicester City Football Club has
tonight [Thursday] parted company
with its first team manager, Claudio
Ranieri.
Club statement: #lcfc and Claudio
Ranieri part company: https://t.co/
C5qnSVxDgU pic.twitter.com/
VqlHy1I6Ut
- Leicester City (@LCFC) February 23,
2017
¤
"Claudio, appointed City manager in
July 2015, led the Foxes to the
greatest triumph in the club's 133-
year history last season, as we were
crowned champions of England for
the first time. His status as the
most successful Leicester City
manager of all time is without
question.
¤
"However, domestic results in the
current campaign have placed the
club's Premier League status under
threat, and the board reluctantly
feels that a change of leadership,
while admittedly painful, is
necessary in the club's greatest
interest."
Leicester were favourites to be
relegated upon Ranieri's
appointment, having been involved
in a relegation fight the season
before under Nigel Pearson.
However, inspired by players
including Jamie Vardy, Riyad
Mahrez and N'Golo Kante, Leicester
went on to challenge at the top of
the table, eventually seeing off
Tottenham to the title.
But Leicester were unable to keep
hold of Kante in the summer, with
the midfielder leaving for Chelsea,
while Vardy and Mahrez have
struggled to replicate last season's
form, contributing to Leicester's
decline.
Leicester issued Ranieri a vote of
confidence earlier this month,
saying he had their "unwavering
support," but vice chairman
Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said it
was in the best interests of the club
for the 65-year-old to be dismissed.
Srivaddhanaprabha said: "This has
been the most difficult decision we
have had to make in nearly seven
years since King Power took
ownership of Leicester City. But we
are duty-bound to put the club's
long-term interests above all sense
of personal sentiment, no matter
how strong that might be.
¤
"Claudio has brought outstanding
qualities to his office. His skilful
management, powers of motivation
and measured approach have been
reflective of the rich experience we
always knew he would bring to
Leicester City. His warmth, charm
and charisma have helped
transform perceptions of the club
and develop its profile on a global
scale. We will forever be grateful to
him for what he has helped us to
achieve.
¤
"It was never our expectation that
the extraordinary feats of last
season should be replicated this
season. Indeed, survival in the
Premier League was our first and
only target at the start of the
campaign. But we are now faced
with a fight to reach that objective
and feel a change is necessary to
maximise the opportunity
presented by the final 13 games."
Leicester were dumped out of the
FA Cup last weekend by League One
side Millwall, who were reduced to
10 men, and Ranieri hit out at his
players after the game.
¤
"I want to speak again with the
players and say we have to fight
every match," Ranieri said. "Who
wants to fight? Tell me. I need the
soldiers, I need the gladiators."
Assistant manager Craig
Shakespeare and first-team coach
Mike Stowell, meanwhile, will take
charge of the Leicester squad until
a new manager is appointed.
Ranieri's assistant manager and
first-team coach Paolo Benetti, as
well as his first-team sport science
and conditioning coach Andrea
Azzalin, have also departed with
him

Ghana Police arrest traders who stripped Nigerian woman naked, brutally beat and sexually assaulted her for allegedly stealing yam

Police in the Ashanti Region capital,
Kumasi, have arrested an
unspecified number of traders who
stripped naked and beat up an
unidentified Nigerian lady alleged
to have stolen items at the Kumasi
Central Business District.
A screening exercise is expected to
take place later Wednesday to
identify those who actually
participated in the brutal treatment
meted out to the unidentified lady.
In the disturbing video that has
gone viral on social media since
Friday, February 17, a light-skin lady
is seen being stripped naked and
sexually assaulted in public by a
mob over the alleged theft.
The video starts at a point where
the young lady had been stripped
off her clothes. She covered her
waist with a yellow scarf given to
her by a good Samaritan, but it was
removed by the mob.
Another woman who offered a
dress was shoved off and the young
lady was not allowed to put it on.
The mob made up mostly of men,
tore the young lady’s red brassiere
and panty. Some disgusting men hit
her bum several times while some
other disgusting men grabbed her
breasts. At a point in the video, the
men spread her legs open and
kicked her private part many times.
Attempts by the young lady to
prevent the mob from hitting her
private part was met with even
harder beatings.
One person who took part in the
beating told a reporter that they
stripped her naked and beat her
because it is not good for a lady to
engage in such an ungodly act.
Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor
reports Wednesday morning that
the women, mostly traders, who
volunteered information that led to
the arrest of the some of the
attackers have also been picked up
to assist with ongoing investigations
into the incident. Meanwhile, the
whereabouts of the assaulted lady
remains unknown.
Shortly after the video went viral,
many have condemned the heinous
treatment of the woman. Executive
Director of the Ark Foundation,
Angela Dwamena Aboagye, recently
joined gender activists to condemn
the mob attack.

"Look at the manner in which they
purported to arrest her, they
stripped her and look at the acts
of violence that were perpetuated
against her. When it comes to
women, this also sits within not
just a social justice framework or
criminal law framework, but
within violence against women
which is completely a human
rights issue as well," she told Joy
News.

Also, human rights lawyer Francis
Xavier Sosu has urged the
Commission on Human Rights and
Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to
step up its education of human
rights to curb abuses as Social
Justice Day was observed globally
Thursday.
In a release on Tuesday,
OccupyGhana also joined calls
demanding justice for the lady,
asking that the police use the video
to arrest the men responsible for
the assault.

UEFA Champions League Final - Bayer Leverkusen 2-4 Atletico Madrid [[Final - Manchester City 5-3 AS Monaco

Manchester City overcame Monaco
in an eight-goal thriller at the
Etihad Stadium, coming from
behind to run out 5-3 winners in
their Champions League round-
of-16 first leg.
Radamel Falcao's brace had looked
to set Monaco on their way to a 3-2
victory after the hour-mark, but
goals from Sergio Aguero -- his
second of the night -- John Stones
and Leroy Sane turned the game on
its head.
The match got off to a lively start
with both sides showing plenty of
attacking intent, though the first
real chance did not come until the
15th minute when Raheem Sterling
attempted to round Danijel Subasic,
with the loose ball falling to Aguero
who tried to beat the Monaco
keeper from a tight angle only to
see his effort saved.
Monaco had an opportunity of their
own to break the deadlock after 18
minutes when Benjamin Mendy
was picked out by Kylian Mbappe,
but he was unable to beat Willy
Caballero at his near post.
A minute later and the visitors had
another sight of goal after Yaya
Toure failed to clear a corner and
the ball fell to Kamil Glik at the far
post, but the defender sent his
header wide from close range.
City managed to open the scoring in
the 26th minute through Sterling,
who arrived in the box to convert
Sane's cross from close range after
the Germany international had
linked up well with David Silva.
However, Monaco were level six
minutes later as Falcao got on the
end of a Fabinho cross to head
home after the Brazilian had
intercepted a poor Caballero
clearance.
City thought they had a penalty
moments later when Aguero,
through on goal, went to ground
after attempting to round Subasic
but the striker was shown a yellow
card for allegedly diving.
Mbappe had a chance to edge
Monaco in front on 36 minutes
when Falcao's flick-on played the
ball into his path inside the box but
he sent his effort just over the bar.
Mbappe did not make the same
mistake four minutes later, though,
when latching onto Fabinho's ball
over the top that opened up the
City defence, with the 18-year-old
firing first time into the roof of the
net to stun the home support.
It could well have been another just
before the break for Monaco --
dangerous with every attack against
a struggling City defence -- when
Falcao found himself free with the
ball inside the area but he could
only strike into side netting.
Monaco started the second half as
they ended the first and won a
penalty just four minutes after the
restart when Nicolas Otamendi was
adjudged to have brought down
Falcao in the area.
Falcao got back on to his feet to
take the penalty, but his weak effort
was comfortably saved by Caballero
who guessed the right way.
City were gifted a way back into the
game in the 58th minute by Subasic
when Aguero, who had been played
in by Sterling, fired a strike straight
at him that he somehow allowed to
slip through his fingers and into the
back of the net.
But just two minutes later and
Monaco's advantage was restored
when Falcao outmuscled Stones in
the box before clipping a stunning
chip over Caballero.
The game continued to remain
open as the second half wore on
with another chance presenting
itself to Mbappe on 69 minutes, but
the forward's effort from a tight
angle smashed into the side
netting.
Two minutes later and City had
levelled the game again, with Silva
picking out Aguero from the corner
and the Argentina international
burying a volley into the far corner.
And after 77 minutes the hosts had
completed the turnaround when
Stones arrived at the far post to
turn Toure's header into the back of
the net to send the Etihad wild.
Aguero could have added another
for City just a few moments later
only to see his strike saved, before
Mane did make it five on 82
minutes, slotting home from close
range after being teed up by the
Argentine.

Breaking!!! Zlatan Ibrahimovic Sets New Premier League Record

The Red Devils striker has
reached a landmark for Jose
Mourinho’s side against
Leicester City, becoming the
oldest player to score 15 goals
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has set a
new Premier League record,
becoming the oldest player to
reach 15 goals in a single
season.
The former Sweden
international joined Manchester
United from PSG in the summer,
and has made an instant impact
at Old Trafford, netting 15 goals
in 24 appearances for Jose
Mourinho’s side.
On Sunday, he scored United’s
second against Leicester City,
taking him to 15 goals at 35
years and 125 days old.
Ibrahimovic swept home from
inside the area after good work
from Antonio Valencia found
him in the area, putting the ball
through the legs of Wes Morgan
and into the Foxes net.
The former Barcelona man also
made Premier League history
earlier in the season, netting the
competition’s 25,000th goal with
his strike against Swansea.
Ibrahimovic now as at least 15
league goals in his last six
seasons, stretching back to his
time at AC Milan.
Since 2006 he has only failed to
reach that landmark once, and
at 35 years old he shows no sign
of stopping.
Counting all competitions, the
forward has also now scored 20
goals in 10 consecutive seasons.
Way back in 2006-07 when he
was with Inter Milan, he fell
short of that target, but still
scored 15 times.
In addition to those,
Ibrahimovic has reached 15
Premier League goals for United
in the fourth fastest number of
games (23), following Ruud van
Nistelrooy (19), Dwight Yorke
(20) and Robin van Persie (21).

Breaking: 2baba cancels nationwide protest

Report just reaching OLB indicate
that the planned nationwide march to
protest against the government scheduled
for Monday, February 6, in Lagos and
Abuja has been cancelled.
2baba, who was seen as the 'poster boy' of
the protest, shared a video on his Instagram
handle, on Saturday, February 4, where he
announced the cancellation of the planned
protest due to security concerns and public
safety consideration.
According to the singer the protest is under
serious threat of hijack by interests not
aligned with the ideals of the march

Dear Nigerians!!! Due to security
concerns and public safety
consideration. I hereby
announce the cancellation of
the planned March.

Recall that 2baba lent his voice to the
Enough is Enough group which packaged
the protest and several other celebrities had
vowed to be present at different venues.
There had been plans by the police in Lagos
state to stop the peaceful march against the
President Muhammadu Buhari-led
government, but a truce was reached on
Friday, February 3, and the security
operatives will now serve as back up for the
people.
The federal government had also insisted
that it was not against the protest as citizens
have a right to association.

Eden Hazard and Will Ferrell Are Step Brothers

Will Ferrell doesn’t need John
C. Reilly when he’s got Eden
Hazard as his Step Brother.
The comedian was at Stamford

Chelsea’s one-sided 3-1 victory
over Arsenal.
And he had Reilly – his co-star

the stands to watch the victory
for Hazard and his team-

The club confirmed on social

alongside him – so Hazard
stepped in:

CHELSEA 3-1 ARSENAL! 12 points clear at the top of the league and London is Blue!

Marcos Alonso, Eden Hazard and
Cesc Fabregas were all on target as
Chelsea defeated Arsenal 3-1 at
Stamford Bridge to move 12 points
clear at the top of the Premier
League table.
Alonso opened the scoring in the
13th minute and Hazard added an
excellent second eight minutes into
the second half before Fabregas
made it three against his old club,
with Olivier Giroud pulling one back
for Arsenal, as the Blues took a
major step towards the title.
It was Arsenal who created the first
chance of the game inside the
second minute, with Alex Iwobi
picking up the ball on the edge of
the box and seeing his strike deflect
just wide of the goal.
Chelsea fashioned their first
opportunity after 11 minutes when
Pedro found Gary Cahill inside the
area with a free kick, only for the
centre-back to head his cross over
the bar.
The hosts, however, managed to
break the deadlock two minutes
later, with Alonso beating Hector
Bellerin to a loose ball to head
home the rebound after Diego
Costa had first crashed his own
header back off the crossbar.
Chelsea, in control of the game at
this point, nearly made it two soon
after with Pedro playing in Costa,
only for the striker to fire an effort
into the side netting.
The Blues kept up the pressure
against the visitors and created
another opportunity after 32
minute when Alonso found Pedro in
the box, with the Spaniard then
forcing Petr Cech into a save.
Arsenal improved towards the end
of the half and could well have
equalised through Gabriel, but the
unmarked defender saw his header
tipped over by Thibaut Courtois
after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had
whipped in a cross.
The Gunners then had another
opportunity to draw level on the
stroke of half-time as Mesut Ozil
picked up the ball unmarked inside
the box, but dawdled in possession
before eventually striking a low hit
at goal that Courtois was able to
save.
Chelsea did not have to wait long to
double their lead after the restart,
with Hazard finding the back of the
net in style in the 53rd minute,
driving from his own half towards
goal, while shaking off Francis
Coquelin in the process, before
gliding into the box and slotting
past Cech.
Arsenal brought on Giroud and
Danny Welbeck in an attempt to get
back into the game but struggled to
create anything clear-cut until the
77th minute when the latter
planted a header on goal which
Courtois did brilliantly to tip round
the post.
The Gunners came close again from
the ensuing corner with Shkodran
Mustafi arriving at the near post
unmarked before failing to hit the
target with a header.
There was still time for a third late
on for Chelsea, with Fabregas
getting in on the act against his
former side, sending the ball into
an empty net from distance after
intercepting a poor clearance from
Cech.
Giroud scored a consolation goal
for Arsenal deep into stoppage
time, heading in a Nacho Monreal
cross, but it was too little, too late
for the visitors.

What Manchester United Need To Do To Finish In Top Four” – Mourinho Says

Manchester United manager, Jose
Mourinho, has said that his team needs
to start scoring more goals, if they want
to finish in the Premier League top four
at the end of this season.
United have scored only 33 goals after 23
matches this campaign, which is their
second worst ratio at this stage of the
season in the Premier League era.
They also have the third worst conversation
rate in the league, behind Hull City and
Southampton.

“I understand what you are saying,”
Mourinho said in his press conference on
Friday.
“We attack so much and with so many
players, and so many players have the
freedom in our dynamic to reach scoring
positions.
“I have to agree with you that we don’t
score enough goals, and some of our
players from these attacking creative
positions they could –they should – score
more goals.
“When you see the number of goals we
score, there’s not a true relation between
our attacking production and the number of
payers we put in attacking positions and the
number of goals we score.”
Speaking on United’s 0-0 draw with Hull
on Wednesday, which left them four points
off fourth place, Mourinho said: “We didn’t
get the three points we wanted, so it’s as
simple as that.
“It was a bad result for us, but we are
exactly in the same position, which is try to
win the next game. That is what we have
done for a long time.
“Every draw we deserved a victory, We
never had a draw where we could say we
were lucky, or got less than what we
deserved, but the reality is the reality of the
points, and we lost those points.”
Mourinho added: “When you speak about
Zlatan’s goals you should always add 14
goals, one penalty in 31 matches played in
England, in all competitions. You should
always add that extra item.
“In almost every team the striker is the top
scorer – I think so – unless you have
another player with a special feeling to
score goals coming from another position
or you have another player scoring six
seven or eight goals from penalties, that is
normal to happen.”

is still haunted by Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to

the top of the table.
Chelsea have also won 15 of their last 17
Premier League matches since the defeat.
The former Italy coach says the Arsenal
defeat has never been far from his thoughts
over the past four months.

He told news conference, “This defeat
seems far [away], but it’s important to
remember the defeat against Arsenal
because it was a bad defeat, 3-0 after the
first half, and in my mind it’s always
present.
“Tomorrow this game will be very difficult
and I think it’s important to remember the
first game against Arsenal. I think a lot of
things have changed now. For sure, we are
a team [now].
“We want to have a good game tomorrow
against Arsenal and try to win. We play at
home and we have our fans to push [us] a
lot. For these reasons, we want to play a
good game, to win, but it will be a really
tough game and we must pay great
attention.”
Conte insists that the result of Arsenal’s last
Tuesday’s encounter against Watford result
is not a true reflection of the challenge his
team can expect to face at Stamford Bridge.
“Sometimes the final result doesn’t tell the
truth,” Conte said. “If you watch the game,
I think Arsenal were unlucky a lot. Watford
played a really good game, but Arsenal had
a lot of opportunities to score the goal,
draw and then win.
“It didn’t happen, but I think they are in
good shape, in good form, and that result
was a strange result.
“If we win the game, for sure, it’s a good
hit for us. To improve our own place in the
table, take three points and also to have
Arsenal 12 points [away], that’s very good.
But tomorrow, I’m sure, it will be a really
tough game and we must pay great
attention.
“Arsenal beat us already in the first game,
and they have the possibility to repeat this
in this game. For this reason, we must be
focused, stay in great concentration, and
have the same anger, the same will to fight
and try to win. It’s important. I like to
repeat to my players: look at yourselves,
not at others.”

Police vow to stop February 6th planned protest in Lagos

The Lagos state police
commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, says
that the state police command
might stop the February 6th
planned protest in Lagos state
because information reaching them
suggests that some hoodlums are
planning to hijack the protest.
According to Owoseni, the
organizers of the protest in Lagos
have not notified the police about it
yet.
Speaking to newsmen in Lagos
yesterday, Owoseni said

“Information reaching us revealed
that some hoodlums are planning
to hijack the peaceful protest.
And as such, we won’t allow it to
hold in Lagos. We know that
Tuface do not have the capacity to
contain such a crowd and we will
not fold our hands and watch
while things go out of hand.”

Fayose reacts to online backlash over his public support for Feb. 6th nationwide protest

Fayose's media aide, Lere Olayinka,
released this statement on his
Facebook wall this afternoon. Read
below The blogosphere is now in
flame just because Governor Ayo
Fayose declared his support for
Tuface's rally slated for Monday
February 6th 2017.
The APC online supporters have
warned Tuface against allowing
opposition politicians to join the
protest. The hypocrisy of these APC
people is legendary!
Anyway, for the sake of clarity,
Fayose only declared support for
the rally being an opposition figure!
However, If Fayose is one of those
bankrolling the protest, so be it!!! I
want to say without any fear or
favour that 90% of protests staged
against Goodluck Jonathan
government had financial support
from Bourdillon and APC controlled
states and I stand corrected.
When Tinubu and APC Governors
were bankrolling Actors and
Actresses such as 9ice (Who later
served as Special Adviser to APC
Gov. Ajimobi in Oyo), Ronke Oshodi
Oke (She’s a member of APC
transition committee in Ondo),
Dayo Adeneye D1 (current
Commissioner for Information in
Ogun State) Desmond Elliot (now a
member of Lagos State House of
Assembly), Jide Josoko (Veteran APC
Reps Aspirant from Lagos) etc to
stage protest against Jonathan's
government, heaven did not fall.
All the aforementioned entertainers
were at Freedom Park, Ojota in
January 2012 for one week, singing
against Jonathan in the presence of
Pastor Tunde Bakare of the CPC
(now APC) and Dino Melaye; and
Heaven did not fall then.
Those of you making noise today
applauded anti-Jonathan protesters
and the opposition politicians
supporting them. The then
Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode
Fayemi in particular gave N10
million to Occupy Naija members in
Ado-Ekiti. So why should Fayose's
case be different?
