Blackberry could be banned in Nigeria

Blackberry services could be at
risk of being
banned in the country as a new
regulation by
the Nigerian Communications
Commission, NCC, will run counter to the
technical
operating standards of the
phone's distinct
network.
National Mirror exclusively gathered
yesterday that the telecoms
regulator was
working on a regulation, which
would make it
mandatory for any licensee in the nation's
telecoms market to provide
access to its
communications facilities for
necessary
interception by the law enforcement agencies.
To be called 'Lawful interception
of
communications regulations", the
regulation,
which is currently at the draft stage, is based
on the need to provide a legal
and regulatory
framework for the lawful
interception of
communications in Nigeria and the collection
and disclosure of intercepted
communication.
It will also specify the nature and
types of
communications to be intercepted; prescribe
penalties for noncompliance with
the
regulations; provide a
notification to the
commission of all warrants issued, amended,
renewed or cancelled under the
regulations as
well as ensure the privacy of
subscribers as
contained in the Nigerian constitution. It was
gathered that Section 13 of the
regulation
Protected or Encrypted
Communications will
run counter to the technical operations of
Blackberry.
By their designs and unlike other
mobile
devices, Blackberry messages
are encrypted and where criminal investigation
is required,
the law enforcement agents will
face denial of
access to Blackberry network.
Specifically, Section 13 of the regulation
empowers the National Security
Adviser, NSA,
and the State Security Service,
SSS, to request
the disclosure of protected or encrypted
communications.
According to the regulation:
"Where the
communications intercepted is an
encrypted or protected communication, the
licensee shall
provide the National Security
Adviser and the
State Security Service with the
key, code or access to the protected or
encrypted
communication.
"Where the key or code is in the
possession of
another person, the licensee shall be under an
obligation to request such other
person to
disclose the key or code to the
National
Security Adviser and the State Security Service
for the purpose of complying
with a warrant."
The regulation, under Section 20,
also
specifies the penalties for contravention.
However, Blackberry messenger,
email and
web services are sent over an
encrypted
network and the company maintains a strict
policy of non-disclosure of pass
codes or keys
to government officials.
Last year, officials of Blackberry
said the Blackberry users in Nigeria were
about three
million and these individuals face
an uncertain
future in case of possible
revocation of Blackberry licence by the
regulator, given its
stern position not to release the
key to its
encrypted network to any
government officials.
Blackberry has continued to face
widespread
concern over its strong data
encryption, which
is beloved by corporate customers eager to
guard secrets, but troublesome
for some
governments in the Middle East
and Asia that
it could be used by militants to avoid
detection.
It also gathered that the NCC's
current move
was in line with strategic
measures of the Federal Government to ensure
maximum
national security by providing a
legal
framework that empowers the
law enforcements agencies to access
any licensed
communication network in the
country.

Sir Alex Ferguson announces his retirement

Manchester United manager,Sir Alex Ferguson, has announced his decision to retire at the end
of the season. The 71 year old
who became Man U manager in
1986, will bow out after Man U
meets West Bromwich Albion on
May 19th and will join the football club board as director &
ambassador. Sir Alex is the most successful
manager in English football
history. He won 38 tropphies,
including two Champions League
and 13 Premier League. Sir Alex
Ferguson told United’s website: “The decision to retire is one
that I have thought a great deal
about and one that I have not
taken lightly. It is the right time.
It was important to me to leave
an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I
have done so. The quality of this
league winning squad, and the
balance of ages within it, bodes
well for continued success at the
highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure
that the long-term future of the
club remains a bright one. “Our training facilities are
amongst the finest in global
sport and our home Old Trafford
is rightfully regarded as one of
the leading venues in the world. "As for my players and staff,
past and present, I would like to
thank them all for a staggering
level of professional conduct and
dedication that has helped to
deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their
contribution the history of this
great club would not be as rich. “In my early years, the backing
of the board, and Sir Bobby
Charlton in particular, gave me
the confidence and time to build
a football club, rather than just
a football team. “Over the past decade, the
Glazer family have provided me
with the platform to manage
Manchester United to the best
of my ability and I have been
extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and
trustworthy Chief Executive in
David Gill. I am truly grateful to
all of them.” “Going forward, I am delighted
to take on the roles of both
Director and Ambassador for the
club. With these activities, along
with my many other interests, I
am looking forward to the future,” “I must pay tribute to my family,
their love and support has been
essential. My wife Cathy has
been the key figure throughout
my career, providing a bedrock
of both stability and encouragement. Words are not
enough to express what this has
meant to me.”

Former bayelsa Gov Timipre sylva Arrested

Former Bayelsa governor,
Timipre Sylva has been arrested
by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC). Timipre
Sylva was arrested today
Wednesday May 8th and interrogated in connection with
fraud charges, according to a
statement released by the anti-
graft agency today. EFCC said in the statement that
the former governor "was found
hiding in a dingy corner in the
upper chamber of his expansive
mansion," in Abuja after his staff
told them he was not in town when they went to make the
arrest. Find a statement issued by the
commission’s spokesperson,
Wilson Uwujaren, after the cut... “The Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC), today,
May 8, 2013, arrested the
former governor of Bayelsa
State, Timipre Sylva. “He was picked up at his No. 3,
Niger Street, Maitama, Abuja
home. On arrival at the facility at
about 10.00 am, the
Commission’s operatives were
told that the ex-governor was not in town but they insisted on
conducting a search on the
house having obtained a warrant
from the court. “During the search, vital
documents were obtained.
Ironically, the ex-governor who
was said to be out of town was
later found hiding in a dingy
corner in the upper chamber of his expansive mansion. “He was immediately whisked
away and is currently being
interrogated at the Abuja
headquarters of the anti- graft
agency. He is being grilled in
connection with fresh evidence linking him with a bouquet of
fraudulent transactions that
borders on money laundering.
Part of the new evidence
includes a number of eye-
popping real estate acquisitions in Abuja. “The arrest of the former
governor is sequel to his refusal
to honour invitations by the
Commission. Rather than appear
before the EFCC, he got his
lawyers to inform the Commission that he was unable to appear
because he was sick, and
hospitalised in Lagos. The lawyer
had promised to appear with his
client on May 7, 2013 but failed
to do so. “The Commission warns that it
will no longer tolerate the antics
of suspects who treat its
invitations with levity.”

JAMB is out.Go check yours

The Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board (JAMB) has
released the 2013 Unified
Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (UTME) results. The
board, however, withheld 12,110 results for possible disciplinary
action. The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu
Ojerinde, announced this at a
news conference on the release
of the results in Bwari, FCT,
today Friday May 3rd. The registrar said after
thorough processing of answer
scripts of the candidates who
sat for the examination, the
board discovered some forms of
malpractice perpetuated during the conduct of the examination. “However, the results of 68,309
candidates from various centres
are undergoing further
screening to ascertain the
culpability of 12,110 candidates’
results. A total of 1,629,102 candidates
applied to sit for the Paper
Pencil Test (PPT), while 15,008
candidates applied for the Dual
Based Test, bringing the number
of candidates to 1,644,110. “The general performance of
candidates in this year’s
examination shows remarkable
improvement compared with last
year. “Ten candidates scored 300
marks and above, while 127,017
candidates scored between
1-159 marks.
“About 40,692 candidates’
results were invalid due to either multiple shading or no
shading at all. After processing
all the results, the board also
discovered that about 47,974
candidates were absent.“
The registrar assured the candidates that their results
could be accessed on the JAMB
Website: www.myjambresult.com
using their registration numbers. He said about 40 centres would
be screened to ascertain their
culpability and warned the public
against Internet fraudsters. “Information reaching JAMB
shows Internet fraudsters are
already telling candidates that
their results could be upgraded
in one form or the other. This is
pure deceit, the public and candidates are hereby advised
to disregard these fraudsters
since they do not have access to
our data. “Let me once again state that
candidates are allowed to
change their choices of
institutions and courses once
only, this change has to be
effected within two weeks from today. Ojerinde said the Computer
Based Test (CBT) is scheduled to
take place from May 18 to June
1 and appealed to candidates to
reprint their e-registration slips
afresh to further ascertain their CBT centres.

Man jailed 45yrs for stealing Gov Aregbesola's phone

For stealing a N50,000
Sony Ericsson phone
belonging to Governor
Rauf Aregbesola, a 31-
year-old Kelvin Ighodalo
has been sentenced to 45-year imprisonment by
an Osogbo High Court. Ighodalo stole
the phone
from the
pocket of
Aregbesola on November 27,
2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at
Government Technical College,
Osogbo. Justice Oyejide Falola, who
heard the case, found Ighodalo
guilty on six counts, which
included conspiracy, stealing
and fraud. He was sentenced to 10-year
imprisonment for the first
three counts and five years for
each of the last three which
included impersonation,
obtaining property by falsehood and collusion. Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo
deserved the jail term, held
that the convict used the
phone to obtain N500, 000 from
the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle
Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen
Rahman, an associate of the
governor. The jail term, which Falola
pronounced will run
concurrently, means that
Ighodalo will spend the next 10
years behind bars. Assistant principal state
counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora, told
the court that the convict had
served six-year imprisonment in
Ikoyi prison custody in
connection with a murder case in 2005. Counsel to Ighodalo, Mr.
Ameachi Ngwu, prayed the
court to commit him to
community service, stressing
that the convict should not be
incarcerated but rather be placed where people could see
him as a convict.

Terry G and AY.COM in a fight

Although the both parties mentioned do not enjoy the best of relationship for some years now, no one knew it would degenerate into a rofo rofo fight years after, until they finally engaged each other in a severe boxing match recently that finally earned AY a serious head but from ‘Terry the Ginja’ . For the purpose of those who
may not have understood the
whole story, let us revert to the
beginning of the matter. In 2009, AY Dot come launched
an attack on Terry G and
warned him to stop performing
his song, “Pass Me Your Love”
in shows. The song which
featured Terry and was also produced by him turned out to
be a monster hit single later
became the subject of a
misunderstanding between the
two parties over the years. While Terry on his part claims he
has the right of performing the
song since it was a duet that
featured him, AY Dot Come
maintained it was never going to
happen while he lives. Meanwhile, AY on several
occasions lamented of how Terry
G went about collecting money
on his behalf to perform the
song without his consent. Now from the story, you can see
it was an age long animosity
which finally turned out into a
free for all fight, where blows
were exchanged; several bottles
broken, people injured, trying to separate the fight. Fast forward
to what happened at Terry G’s
Iju home on his birthday. An eyewitness said, ‘AY came in
the company of some friends as
a sign of solidarity to celebrate
with the ‘Intellectual Mad Man’
on his birthday and upon sighting
him, Terry G Immediately threw caution to the wind and all the
madness in him was let lose, as
he punched AY severally and
landed him an headbutt. AY upon being rescued reached
out for the next available
weapon but was immediately
intercepted by friends and
colleagues. At this point the
party was already thrown into a halt, while Terry G insisted that
Ay disappears from his house
before something worse
happens. AY was immediately
seen to the gate of the
compound with bruises all over his body. Neither Terry G nor AY was
available to give their reaction
on the story, as their both
numbers were switched off as at
the time of filing in this report.
